Centre of Excellence in Communications and Media, Allameh Tabatabai University

The Centre of Excellence in Communications and Media (CECM) was established to address the topics around the two crucial concepts of communications and media. Communication has always been an undeniable part of human lives and "media", as a buzzword and key term in the world today is gaining more and more importance and attention among academia. Owing to the national, regional, and international importance of the concepts, the CECM was founded in Allameh Tabatabai University, Faculty of Communication Sciences (FCS), to form a team of distinguished experts and researchers in the fields of communications, media, public relations, and journalism, among others, to study and put forward practical solutions for improving the areas of communications and media studies.
The activities of the CECM include the following items:

  • Producing and publishing research;
  • Studying and monitoring state-of-the-art developments in the fields of communications and media;
  • Communication with economic, social, and cultural sectors of the country;
  • Identification of research needs in the relevant fields;
  • Cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and private companies in the fields of information and communication technology development;
  • Cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and its affiliated research institutes;
  • Implementing research projects to produce knowledge and solve problems;
  • Designing new interdisciplinary courses in Iran and reviewing the existing curricula and syllabi;
  •  
  • Educating students and scholars at PhD and Postdoctoral levels;
  • Training and educating researchers and scholars able to conduct valuable scientific research at national and international levels;
  • Participating in the development of international academic cooperation;
  • Participating in conferences, workshops and specialized courses;
  • Holding international conferences, workshops and specialized courses with the cooperation of prominent national and international professors;
  • Implementing advanced research in communication science at the international level, especially in the Islamic world
  • Holding courses for international students;
  • Training communication specialists;
  • Establishing contacts with national organizations and collecting the opinions of policy-makers and creating the grounds for cooperation between them;
  • Translating and writing specialized volumes in the field of communication sciences;
  • Publication of a research quarterly in the field of communications;

Structure

One of the priorities in the approval and establishment of the Centres of Excellence in Iran is the level and academic background of its members. In other words, a Centre of Excellence is approved by the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT) if at least the team proposing the establishment of the CoE is composed of top experts and nationally or internationally distinguished professors in the relevant fields.

Moreover, the Centres of Excellence have to be interdisciplinary in nature. Thus, the activities defined for and the members enlisted in these Centres are from different academic areas.
