The present study aims to explore how the second- and third-generation Afghan migrants residing in Tehra construct their identities within the social media platform Instagram. Afghan migrants—particularly those of the second and third generations who were born or raised in Iran—experience multilayered challenges in shaping and representing their identities at the intersection of their homeland and host cultures. Social media, especially Instagram, as an interactive and image-oriented space, provides a new arena for self-representation, identity negotiation, and the creation of hybrid identities.
This qualitative research employed semi-structured interviews with eleven second- and third-generation Afghan migrants living in Tehran. The data were analyzed through open, axial, and selective coding, leading to the extraction of major themes related to the processes of identity representation and redefinition.
Findings reveal that Instagram functions not only as a platform for individual and cultural expression but also as a means of resistance against discrimination, a space for reconstructing social dignity, and a site for forming collective bonds within virtual communities. Moreover, the results indicate that through producing visual and textual content on Instagram, second- and third-generation Afghan migrants create multilayered, hybrid, and dynamic identities that oscillate between a sense of belonging to Afghanistan and integration into Iranian society. Ultimately, this study underscores the role of social media in identity formation processes and highlights the importance of understanding the cultural and communicative dimensions of migration in the digital age.
